How do I get the best quality sound?
To get the best quality sound from your Home Theatre PC it should be connected to home theatre
equipment, such as, an Amplifier or AV Receiver with good quality Home Theatre Speakers. Connection to such
equipment is done using either a number of 3.5mm to RCA Audio Cables or a USB Cable or an Optical/Coaxial Digital Audio Cable.
Many Home Theatre PC systems are sold with Computer Speakers. Computer Speakers will not deliver the home theatre experience
you would expect. Why? Because Computer speakers are designed to be used in a very small room and positioned very close to the
listener, typically, they are placed next to your monitor and in this position they can sound good, but they
are not designed to fill a large room, like your lounge room, with high quality sound. This is where Home Theatre
Speakers come to the rescue. Home Theatre Speakers are designed to fill a large room with high quality sound.
When connecting your Home Theatre PC to an Amplifier, using 3.5mm to RCA Audio Cables or a USB Cable,
Dolby Digital and DTS are not
important and make no difference to the quality of sound you hear from the Amplifier. Dolby Digital and DTS is only
important when using an Optical or Coaxial Digital Cable to connect your Home Theatre PC to an AV Receiver.
In this case, the Home Theatre PC must support either Dolby Digital or DTS
or both. Dolby Digital and DTS are both global standards that AV Receivers understand. It should
be noted that only high quality AV Receivers can decode DTS, where all AV Receiver can decode
Dolby Digital.
Below are the common logo's and their meanings we use throughout our store :-
What is Dolby Digital?
Dolby Digital is an encoding format or standard for compressing mono, stereo, or up to
5.1 discrete channels of surround sound. The .1 refers to a low-frequency effects (LFE) or Subwoofer channel
and the 5 refers to the Left, Center, Right, Left Surround, and Right Surround channels. Dolby
Digital is a lossy format which simply means some sound information is lost during the compression
process. Dolby Digital is a global standard for DVD-Audio and DVD-Video. Dolby Digital is also
known as AC-3. All AV receivers can decode Dolby Digital sound.
What is Dolby Pro Logic 2?
Dolby Pro Logic 2 is technology for transforming any high-quality stereo audio source into 5
independent full-range channels. The 5 channels are Left, Center, Right, Left Surround, and
Right Surround. This brings new life any to stereo content, such as CDs, MP3s and TV
broadcasts.
What is Dolby Pro Logic 2x?
Building on the Dolby Pro Logic 2 features, Dolby Pro Logic 2x is technology for transforming
any high-quality stereo, 5.1, or Dolby Digital Surround EX-encoded content into 6.1 or 7.1
playback channels, depending on speaker configuration. The 7.1 channels are Left, Center, Right,
Left Surround, Left Back, Right Surround, Right Back, and subwoofer.
What is Dolby Digital Live?
Dolby Digital Live converts, in real-time, any stereo or multichannel audio source found in
PCs to the Dolby Digital format. This makes it possible to easily connect
such hardware, using an Optical or Coaxial Digital Cable, to an AV Receiver with high quality
speakers for a dramatic, real-time audio experience.
What is Dolby Headphone?
Dolby Headphone accurately simulates 5.1 channel surround sound over stereo headphones.
What is Dolby Virtual Speaker?
Dolby Virtual Speaker simulates a 5.1 channel speaker system from a pair of stereo speakers.
What is DTS Digital Surround?
DTS Digital Surround or just DTS is a competing encoding format or standard to Dolby Digital.
DTS stands for Digital Theatre Systems. DTS is also a global standard that is found on DVD-Audio
and DVD-Video disks. The DTS standard compresses an audio source a lot less then Dolby Digital,
and this means a lot less sound information is lost during the compression process which
results in outstanding quality sound when connected to a DTS enabled AV Receiver with high quality
speakers. DTS does require more disk space.
What is DTS Interactive?
DTS Interactive converts, in real-time, any stereo or multichannel audio source, up to 5.1,
found in PCs to the DTS format. The enables the highest possible sound quality to be delivered
to a DTS enabled AV receiver or any other DTS compatible surround decoder sound system. Connection
is simply made using an Optical or Coaxial Digital Cable.
What is DTS NEO:PC?
DTS NEO:PC up-mixes any 2 channel audio source into 7.1 discrete channels of surround sound. You
can turn your stereo audio (WMA, MP3, CD and more) into an outstanding multichannel audio
experience when connected to a DTS enabled AV receiver or any other DTS compatible surround decoder
sound system with high quality speakers.
What is DTS Connect?
DTS Connect is a logo created to easily recognise that a PC fully supports the DTS standards using
both DTS Interactive and DTS NEO:PC. This ensures that all sound output from a PC can be played
back on a DTS enabled AV receiver or any other DTS compatible surround decoder sound system.
Connection is via a Optical or Coaxial Digital Cable.
